ONLY VOTE 3 !

By New Canaan Democratic Town Committee

Why are we asking folks to only vote for a total of 3 candidates for the BOE?

Only the top candidates with the most votes will be placed on the Board of Education. That means if you vote for anyone beside Brendan, Lauren and Josh (Row A), it will go against them.

Political Makeup of New Canaan

Republicans make up 37% of the New Canaan electorate, Unafilliated voters make up 35% and Democrats make up 27%.

Democrats make up just under 1/3 of the total voting population. Voting for any Republican or Unaffiliated candidate is a vote against our candidates, and could result in none of our candidates making it to the Board at all.

Why are the BOE candidates separated into two separate sections on the ballot?

In the first section, candidates are running for four 4-year positions.

Incumbent Brendan Hayes and Lauren Connolly Nussbaum (Row A) are running against 3 Republicans and one U candidate for these spots.  The ballot will state you can vote for “up to 4” candidates, but we URGE you to PLEASE vote for just Brendan and Lauren.  YOU DON’T HAVE TO VOTE FOR 4.

Then, there are 2 candidates vying for a 2-year term position, due to a previous vacancy.  Josh Kaye (row A) is running against incumbent Hugo Alves for this position. We are asking that you vote for Josh Kaye.

Basically, vote 2 + 1 = 3.

What if I vote for the 3 Dem Candidates and then vote for a U. Isn’t that OK?

Unfortunately, if you vote for Brendan, Lauren and Josh, and then vote the Unaffiliated candidate, the Republicans and he could get the most votes and then none of our candidates will make it onto the Board.

What is the easiest way to remember this when I am looking at the ballot??

The best way to get Brendan, Lauren and Josh on the Board of Ed is to ONLY vote for the three Row A candidates for BOE.
