What People Are Saying

Mark Grzymski

Vice Chair Town Council

New Canaan could not be more fortunate to have Brendan Hayes running for his third term on the Board of Education.  He is a dedicated servant of this town with a proven track record of putting the best interests of our children at the forefront of his decisions. Having three children at various stages of academic development, he brings pragmatic insight and alignment to this important role. Leveraging his experience as a successful investment banker, he has helped our community optimize its investments in our schools.  Brendan is thoughtful and passionate about supporting our spectacular administration and teachers, attracting/retaining the best talent, and providing strong oversight for the district.

As the parent of a recent New Canaan High School graduate, I have been able to watch the rich journey of personal growth and preparedness that our district offers the children in our community. If Brendan is re-elected to New Canaan’s BOE, I will rest assured knowing he has the fortitude and balance to stay the course in putting the quality of our district’s educational experience first without getting entangled in the distraction of curriculum politics.  It’s thoughtful public servants like Brendan who consistently put the present and future needs of our district and its students into every decision he makes. Please join me in supporting Brendan Hayes for BOE.

Dear Editor:

There is a lot of talk during election season about Board of Education members and candidates having “skin in the game.”  With that in mind, I write to strongly endorse Josh Kaye for the two-year Board of Education seat.

Among his many qualifications for this seat—including his pro bono work on behalf of domestic violence survivors and his current service on the town’s Board of Ethics—Josh Kaye is the father of a student at East Elementary School.  Notably, he is the only candidate who currently has a child at East, and when elected, he will be the only sitting Board of Education member with a child there.

Mr. Kaye also has a child in preschool, who will presumably matriculate to East in the near future.

West Elementary is disproportionately represented among both Board of Education members and candidates; South Elementary, Saxe Middle School, and New Canaan High School are also well represented.  Shouldn’t East Elementary have a seat at the table too?  As a parent to an East Elementary student, I think so.  Having representation with connections to all of our excellent public schools will only make them stronger.

You want skin in the game? Join me in voting for Josh Kaye for Board of Education.

Laura and Andrew Ault

Hello, Mike and the New Canaan community,

Surely, someone scanning the names at the bottom of this letter will think, “Oh lord, those overly vocal leftist pinko monsters,” and someone else will think, “the Aults aren’t liberal enough for me to take seriously.” This deepened sense of division is a shame, but it’s how most human beings read anything in print these days. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and what follows is ours.

We’ve taken a very deliberate step back from hyperpartisan politics in town over the past three years because it’s more joyous and productive to focus on what unites us than what divides us. We worked shoulder-to-shoulder with people of every political stripe to get our town’s beautiful new library and green built. We will side with anyone, be they Republican, Democrat, or Flamenco-dancing space octopus, who can keep New Canaan from the predatory clutches of developers trying to abuse the 8-30g statute and build five-story monuments to architectural mediocrity. Laura takes time every month to report on something interesting in town for this publication. None of this is politically motivated; it’s about serving the common good, and it comes from an earnest love for New Canaan’s character.

Because we care about the character of this town, we have a few recommendations to make.

We believe that Amy Murphy Carroll is the most qualified candidate ever to raise her hand for New Canaan’s top job. Much has been made of her exceptional schooling, her three-decade career in municipal finance, years of service to the Board of Finance, and multidisciplinary volunteer engagement. We don’t need to repeat her resume again; her bona fides are spectacular. It’s her spirit that we find refreshing; she’s not a party line operator, and she’s not afraid to do the harder thing and reach across the aisle and work with people from (gasp!) different parties to achieve mutually great outcomes. We haven’t seen enough equanimity and grace from New Canaan’s highest office recently. When we heard that our current First Selectman had orchestrated the departure of long-serving Democrats from town committees, we were repulsed but not surprised. Viciousness and tribalism have seeped into every corner of American life from the craven edges of the national political scene. Not new news, and also not how we want to spend our lives. We’ll be voting for Amy, not because we’re automatically doing whatever Democrats do (we’re both unaffiliated voters) but because she’s awesome.

Speaking of national politics that have no business influencing New Canaan’s priorities, we’re going to point out the elephant in the room as decorously as possible: certain newer electees to the Board of Education, as well as certain current candidates, seem to be following the extremist Moms for Liberty playbook known on the national stage for trying to influence school curricula to be as regressive as possible.

Ten years ago, our Board of Education was a fairly harmonious group, drama-free and undisturbed by hardline influence. Now, it’s not. Unpack the rhetoric coming from the right-wing faction a bit, and you can spot alarming patterns.

‘Distraction-free learning’ means the notable absence of social and emotional learning, a willful deletion of the soft skills that better prepare children for the ethos of higher education and the corporate environments they hope to inhabit one day.

When a candidate says that she wants the school curriculum to reflect ‘parents’ values,’ you’d better believe that the woman with a Let’s Go Brandon sticker on her car does not mean all parents. She means those parents who share her beliefs about faith, partisan politics, and global health crisis responses.

And finally, the most puzzling priority: ‘Protect our children!’ From what? Given their stated party affiliation, it’s unlikely they mean gun violence, although it is the country’s number one cause of death for people under the age of 18. There’s a boogeyman implied here, some nonexistent horror that will befall New Canaan’s youth if, gasp, educators inform them that trans people exist.

We may be of a waning breed, but we respect people who know more about their fields than we do. If a pilot says to fasten our seat belts, we fasten them. If a doctor says to do something, we do it. If a professional educator with a Ph.D. says, “this is the way to run a classroom in 2023”, we will stand behind them. There is no far-right (or far-left, frankly) agenda that naturally fits New Canaan’s needs, and we owe our community better than fringe philosophies and hyperpartisan dogwhistle rhetoric.

As such, we’re happy to endorse Lauren Connolly Nussbaum, Josh Kaye, and Brendan Hayes for the Board of Ed. They’ve raised their hands for a consequential, demanding job, not out of adherence to a regressive agenda, but out of genuine care and concern for the future of New Canaan’s stellar public education.

“But you don’t have children!” someone will surely point out. We don’t, and you’re welcome for the past ten years of our property taxes being used to educate yours. If our choice to set down roots here doesn’t give us a vested interest in our town’s character, then our mandatory annual donation, paid with love, certainly does.

We’ll be splitting our tickets this year, and voting for a few worthy Republican candidates as well as the aforementioned individuals. Honestly, government SHOULD be a conversation that squarely represents the philosophies of its constituents. We can respect and appreciate contributions from both sides. But it’s only fair to demand that honest campaigning prevail.

We’re sure this letter has provoked some Olympic-level eye-rolls, and we’ll be on the lookout for pitchforks on our lawn for having voiced our opinions. We don’t expect everyone (or anyone, frankly) to agree with our exact positions, but after a lot of homework and a hard look at what motivates our voting, we’re proud to support people who are, hands-down, the better choices for New Canaan’s character.

Jim Lisher

As an Unaffiliated voter living in New Canaan for over 35 years, I’m pleased to support Amy Murphy Carroll for First Selectman. I’ve known, socialized and worked on town projects with Amy. over many years. Amy has the personal, professional and leadership qualities that will make an outstanding First Selectman to lead and manage the affairs of New Canaan.

In 2010, a Health & Human Services Commission task force was formed at the request of the Board of Selectmen to look at needs of the town seniors over the next 20 years, Amy joined our subcommittee on senior housing, and her expertise on community building and financing was a key resource in the successful future planning for the town. .Today, Amy sees senior issues personally every day as her mother resides at Waveny’s New Canaan Inn.

Amy’s professional financial expertise from her long career at JP Morgan Chase and continues with her past 10 years on the Board of Finance, This realistic and innovative financial and business experience is required by the First Selectman to make sound, critical decisions every day. Amy is prepared perfectly for the job… and is committed to our town’s continued multi-faceted success.

I encourage you to join the” I’m with Amy” team with your support and vote.

Christina Fagerstal

Chair, New Canaan DTC

Dear Editor,

New Canaan voters have a real choice this year. Our community can gain from a change in leadership. The New Canaan Democrats Democratic offer a slate of candidates comprised of individuals who are highly qualified, highly informed, and highly motivated to serve our town.

Take Amy Murphy Carroll who is running for First Selectman. A 27-year town resident, Amy and her family understand the New Canaan community and appreciate its public schools. Just this summer Amy retired from a career in municipal finance on Wall Street, where it was her job to analyze the financial strength and capabilities of towns and states across the country. Moreover, she has deep knowledge of New Canaan’s finances having served for 10 years on the Board of Finance and other committees, including the Saxe Middle School Renovation Committee and the Police Building Committee. With her professional background, Amy is ready to shepherd our Town budget on the very first day in office. She knows our town government and is committed to tackling the issues facing our town. New Canaanites can feel peace of mind electing Amy to the role of First Selectman, because she is committed to making sure that all parties are involved in decisions. Her advocacy for a more open process will benefit our town and its taxpayers.

After nearly a century of Republican control of the town government, it is time for real change in New Canaan. Our town’s current leaders have ignored problems and mismanaged some projects, occasionally resulting in substantial increases in costs. Our community would greatly benefit from new leadership in the First Selectman role. Vote for a candidate who values an open decision making process and seeks to include new voices in important decisions. Vote for Amy for First.

Richard Lurie

Secretary, New Canaan DTC

New Canaan Democrats are offering voters a real choice for the Board of Education. Our candidates Brendan Hayes, Lauren Connolly Nussbaum, and Josh Kaye, all parents of children in the New Canaan Public Schools, have set their top priority as putting kids first.

In contrast with mere platitudes expressed by their opponents, Brendan, Lauren, and Josh offer the voters a substantive choice of experienced and committed individuals. These candidates are prepared to face the real issues facing our schools in the coming years, including an enrollment boom, innovation for the twenty-first century, caring for the whole child, and maintaining parent communication and engagement. They are dedicated to preserving the quality of our top-ranked schools and ensuring that our students will succeed in college and whatever course they pursue in life. Republicans hold a disproportionately high share of the seats on New Canaan’s Board of Education, and it is time to change that imbalance.

Our town would greatly benefit from the voices of Brendan, Lauren and Josh on our Board of Education.

Neil Budnick

Board of Finance Member (2007-2022)

Editor:

True leadership in governing requires unique attributes which I have witnessed in Amy Murphy Carroll, candidate for First Selectwoman in New Canaan. Amy is analytical, inquisitive and supportive when it comes to evaluating the Town’s annual operating budget and long-term capital planning projects. Importantly, Amy has worked closely with every aspect of our Town’s operational resources and will steadfastly maintain her commitment to inclusivity, transparency and engagement across our broad community.

While Amy and I do not share the same political party affiliation, I have worked with her as a colleague on the Board of Finance for nearly 10 years and I admire her intelligence and work ethic in the many projects and policy developments in which she has been actively involved.

Above all, Amy puts the taxpayer and our community first! Please join me in voting for Amy Murphy Carroll for First Selectwoman on November 7th.

Doug Stewart

I am writing to voice my support for our friend Lauren Connolly Nussbaum, candidate for the Board of Education.

Lauren is a very active volunteer, coach and board member of many local organizations. She has served on her daughters’ pre-school board, the PTC board, and she co-chaired the “Celebrate Saxe Campaign”. She has coached softball, field hockey, soccer, and basketball in New Canaan. Through her role as the South School PTC liaison to the Board of Education for the past two years, she has attended every BOE meeting, and as a result, she is highly informed of all the important issues.

Lauren is compassionate, kind, and dedicated. She’s a great listener and a hard worker. Her selfless dedication to public service is an inspiration to my wife and me as well as many other parents in New Canaan.

Lauren is not only a role model to her own kids and the kids she coaches, she’s a role model to her kids’ friends and to other parents. Many parents seek her guidance. She’s grounded and has a strong moral compass.

She does not have a partisan agenda. What she does have is an open-minded approach.

It would be nice to return to a time when the BOE was insulated from partisan politics. I don’t recall ever noticing the party affiliation of past BOE members. The BOE seemed apolitical as it should be. We are not on competing teams. We are all parents and neighbors with a shared goal of maintaining excellence in our school system. The majority of our neighbors move to New Canaan because of our exceptional school system. Our teachers rank 31st in the nation out of 11,000 districts! Let’s keep up the great work and move forward, not backward. Lauren Connolly Nussbaum is uniquely qualified to help achieve this goal.

Mark Grzymski

Town Council Vice Chairman

I hope you will join me in supporting Amy Murphy Carroll for First Selectman. As a Town Council member, I worked closely with Amy on many important issues and believe she is more than qualified to tackle the often misunderstood and opaque issues facing residents. As a Board of Finance member, Amy has proven she is fiscally prudent, thoughtful, and respectful of the realities of governing a town like New Canaan. These are qualities we are desperately lacking at the federal level, but lucky to have locally. We ask a lot of the many wonderful volunteers, elected officials, and employees of this town and should expect nothing less from our First Selectmen. Amy is that person! In our many discussions where we had disagreements, she was always respectful as we worked to reach common ground. She has a demonstrated track record of working in a bi-partisan manner, with her only objective being what is best for the town. Furthermore, she is committed to opening town government to every citizen willing to help, irrespective of party affiliation.

With a 30-year career in municipal finance, Amy brings exceptional and up to date expertise to the role of First Selectman. Amy’s dedication to the town through her work on the Board of Finance, intimate knowledge of the important departments keeping this town safe and productive, and respect for the tremendous success of our school system, will strengthen New Canaan’s reputation, but in a fiscally prudent manner as her track record has showed. I ask residents of any party affiliation to talk with Amy, as I am confident you will understand why she is the most balanced candidate employees, volunteers, and residents of New Canaan need and deserve.

Adam Wexler

East School Parent

I write as a fellow East School parent to endorse Josh Kaye for the Board of Education.

Like many New Cannanites, we moved to New Canaan in no small part because of the reputation of its schools. Our experience has been that this reputation matches reality.

Josh embodies the kind of confident, principled, and composed leadership that our town needs to support our administrators and teachers to continue their good work. Josh understands the value of collaboration, and I know that he will work effectively and thoughtfully with other members of the Board of Education in support of this mission.

I know this because I know that Josh puts his kids first, and he is running for the Board of Education because he wants to be in a position to put all of our kids first. As an attorney who spent many years litigating high profile matters, Josh is uniquely skilled at identifying strategies to bring various – or even conflicting – viewpoints together to achieve consensus. That talent, combined with Josh’s focus on supporting our teachers and administrators to do the best they can for our students, positions Josh to be an asset to the Board of Education, our schools, and all of New Canaan.

Ruth Rothseid

A little over a year ago, I attended a New Canaanite meeting and saw Janet Fonss in action.  A controversial subject came up, and Janet defended her position with polite force and facts. After that experience, I decided that Janet was a person whom I wanted to know better, and I am so glad that I did.

Janet has history in New Canaan and has been a part of the fabric of its life for 24 years.  While  she has lived here, Janet has done it all, from school volunteer to classroom coordinator, and fundraiser for school programs.  Janet is a leader.  She was the Co-President of the West Elementary School Parent Teacher Committee and Board Member of the New Canaan Beautification League and the Organization of Chinese Americans in Fairfield County. She has also volunteered in other charities such as the National Charity League and the New England Dance Theater/Academy.

A knowledge of finance is essential to being an effective member of New Canaan’s Town Council.  Janet certainly qualifies.  She worked in financial services for Chase Manhattan Bank, Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank after having earned a B.S. In Business Management and Marketing from Boston College.  Janet will see to it that fiscal responsibility is addressed with the various issues that come before the Town Council.

The New Canaan Town Council is comprised of 12 members.  To successfully work with 11 other people, you must be transparent, collegial and non-partisan.  Janet has those qualities and more.  Janet has 9 siblings.  She knows how to work with other people.   I will vote for Janet on November 7, and I encourage you to do so as well.

Peggy Dannemann

Dear Editor,

When we look at our local election on November 7th, one thing is sure: we will have a fresh team of Selectmen who will each bring expertise, energy and deep commitment to their roles. We are fortunate that these talented individuals have decided to run. For the position of First Selectman, I will be voting for Amy Murphy Carroll.

The New Canaan Schools’ budget consumes 64% of our Town’s total budget, according to our Board of Finance Chair. Our outstanding school system is one of the treasures of raising families here, but it leaves only 36% of the budget to deliver everything else. The quality and resilience of our infrastructure, the responsiveness of our fire, police, emergency management, public health and social services departments; recreational amenities and cultural activities: these are also essential for a thriving community. Amy Murphy Carroll is the better candidate to ensure that we squeeze everything we possibly can from that remaining 36%.

Amy has served on our Board of Finance for ten years, co-authoring a comprehensive Town Building Study and Board of Finance debt guidelines. She served on the employee pension sub-committee and on the Saxe and Police Department building committees. She served as the Board’s liaison to the Board of Education, Public Works and Parks and Recreation. Amy knows potholes, pension funds, sidewalks, storm drainage, field maintenance, debt financing, paving, building construction and the granular details of the Board of Ed budget. Her tenure on the Board overlaid the last decade of her thirty-year career in municipal finance. As the lead analyst with JP Morgan for the State of Connecticut and for every town and city in the State, she knows the best practices for financing projects and the impacts of those projects on communities. Her expertise in the job of First Selectman will ensure that our tax dollars are well-spent.

Amy is committed to a community where all residents can participate. She believes that our town is no place for partisan divisiveness and will welcome all residents who raise their hands to help. She knows that failing to fully engage the talent and ideas of the 35.3% of our residents who choose not to affiliate with a political party squanders the most valuable resource of all: our people.

This November will bring new faces to our Board of Selectmen. The challenges we’ve faced over the last few years have shown us that, in order to tackle the issues we’re facing, we need a forward-thinking, open-minded leader with a broad perspective and deep expertise, one who welcomes good ideas from all corners. For this reason, I hope that you will join me on November 7th in voting for Amy Murphy Carroll for First Selectman, the better choice for New Canaan.
