Sen. Murphy comments on Education Dept. cuts

Sen. Chris Murphy challenges Pres. Donald Trump on steps to cut, and eventually eliminate, the Department of Education. In a post to constituents, Sen. Murphy said: “Let’s be clear: Doing this without Congressional approval would be illegal. But everything we’ve seen from Trump and Musk makes clear that he is going to try nonetheless — consequences be damned.”

This is about destroying public schools, he says, adding it’s about selling off our public schools to corporations and private equity companies so schools can be run to make a profit instead of to educate our kids.

“Now you may hear Republicans try to lie that the entire Department of Education is not being shut down”, Murphy explained. “And that’s sort of true because, don’t worry, they’ve made clear that they intend to continue collecting on student loans. Because again, this is all a reverse Robin Hood. They know they can continue to saddle young people with high-cost debt, and they’ll use the profits of young people trying to pursue education to better themselves to cut taxes for corporations and billionaires.”

“Our kids will pay the price if Trump is able to succeed. This is why it is so important to keep the pressure on my colleagues”, Murphy said.
