SCOTUS Decisions: A Recap and Call to Action

In the past two days, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has made several significant decisions that have stirred conversations across the nation. These rulings touch on crucial issues such as student debt relief, affirmative action in college admissions, and LGBTQ protections. While some may find these topics disheartening, it is important to approach them with a mix of seriousness and positivity to keep the focus towards the direction of change. In this blog, we will recap these recent SCOTUS decisions and discuss actionable steps we can take to influence change. Join us!

No More Debt Relief for Students:

One of the recent SCOTUS decisions has eliminated the possibility of debt relief for students. This ruling means that recent graduates will no longer have the opportunity to have up to $20,000 of their student debt forgiven, which could have provided much-needed financial relief in today's challenging job market. The decision is disappointing for many who were hoping for support in managing their student loan burden.

No More Affirmative Action at College Admissions

Another significant decision by SCOTUS is the elimination of affirmative action in college admissions. While colleges and universities are now prohibited from considering race as a specific factor in admissions, the court emphasizes that applicants should be treated based on their individual experiences rather than their race.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor noted that the court's decision imposed a specific college application format and failed to acknowledge the reality that race matters in students' lives.

Less protection for LGBTQ

The Supreme Court’s conservative majority ruled in favor of an evangelical Christian graphic artist from Colorado who does not want to create wedding websites for same-sex couples, despite the state’s protective anti-discrimination law due to first amendment.

Dear Gen Z, It's Time to Wake Up:

One of the most powerful ways to influence change is through VOTING. Remember, today’s ruling took away $20,000 from your pocket, and potentially gave you harder life by not granting you opportunities through affirmative action.

Don't Be Afraid to Play the Long Game:

Recognizing the current composition of SCOTUS, we must understand the importance of playing the long game. Just like the Marvel franchise, which took ten years and four phases to build a captivating universe, we can invest a few years to limit SCOTUS's power. By focusing on winning the Senate and securing the House, we can pave the way for progressive change.

Win back the House:

Winning back the house can set us up for long term action against these SCOTUS rulings by imposing terms and passing these legislations.
