Congressional delegation announces $21.8 million transportation grant

Connecticut’s congressional delegation, along with Gov. New Lamont, recently announced that the state received a $21.8 million grant to provide for pedestrian and road safety projects in the state, including specific projects in Stamford and Norwalk.

In announcing the grants, Sen. Chris Murphy said: “This almost $22 million will support projects across the state to improve road safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, make public transit more accessible to everyone, and reconnect neighborhoods. Projects like these have impacts far beyond transportation—they create good-paying jobs and revitalize our downtowns, and I’m glad to see the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continue to pay dividends.”

Rep. Jim Himes joined with his colleagues on commending the projects, saying the funding will make roads safer for commuters, children going to school and families visiting relatives. “As an avid biker myself,” Himes said, “I understand the importance of dedicated infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists so that every member of our community can easily traverse our cities and enjoy Southwest Connecticut’s vibrant natural spaces and bustling commercial areas.

The funds include $17 million for a greenway in Stamford for its Westside Neighborhood Connector Project and $600,000 for Norwalk’s MLK Reconnection Community Project to improve pedestrian safety and remediate safety risk stemming from I-95 and the care centric corridor it created.
