Chris Murphy announces Federal Transportation Grants for CT

Given New Canaan and Fairfield County’s reliance on the regional rail system, Senator Chris Murphy recently announced that the Federal Railroad Administration will be providing $2 billion in federal funding for 10 rail infrastructure upgrades designed to improve the service into New York from New Canaan and the region. As Murphy said in announcing the grants, the funding will result in “faster train trips and more good-paying construction jobs for Connecticut.”

“When Congress was writing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, my number one priority was making sure any legislation we passed made long-term, historic investments in modernizing the Northeast Corridor,” Sen. Murphy said in a press release announcing the federal grants. "I’m thrilled that Connecticut is receiving $2 billion in federal funding to make our rail system faster, safer, and more advanced. Investing in the future of rail in Connecticut is a no-brainer – it makes life easier for travelers and commuters, boosts economic growth, creates good-paying jobs, and helps fight the climate crisis. I will always be a champion for the NEC in Washington.”

The funding will finance upgrades to several bridges on the rail line, along with improvements to the power lines that serve Metro North, track repairs and upgrade security infrastructure at multiple stations, among other projects. Murphy was joined in the announcement with his colleagues in the Connecticut Congressional delegation.

Also of note:
And as the recent cold temperatures signal the onset of winter, Sen. Murphy also announced that Connecticut will receive $72 million from the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. The program provides assistance to families and seniors that enable them to keep their homes lit and warm during the winter months. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Murphy said he was committed to ensuring as much funding as possible for Connecticut so Connecticut families don’t have to choose between feeding their families and paying their heating bills. The $72 million, he said, is just the first batch of funding he expects to secure for Connecticut.
